Belloccio Sunless Tanning Airbrush System
Safe, easy and effective, the complete Professional Belloccio Sunless Tanning Airbrush System is designed to deliver a DHA sunless tanning solution - the only safe alternative to UV tanning. The Belloccio System offers a terrific way to create your own "perfect tan". This manual is designed to help you utilize and maintain your airbrush. It contains important equipment usage instructions, please keep it for your reference.
- The Belloccio Sunless Tanning Airbrush System is a Multi-Purpose Precision Single-Action Gravity Feed Airbrush. The equipment includes:
- a 0.4 mm fluid tip that comes with two sizes of screw-on plastic fluid cups (3/4 & 1.5 oz.)
- a super-quiet mini airbrush compressor (g) with three airflow control settings (light, medium and high)
- a 6-foot "push on" rubber airbrush hose (h)
- a 12V DC adapter (c), with an 110V AC plug
- Here is how the DHA (dioxyhydroacetone) tanning solution works:
- DHA is a 3-carbon sugar that is colorless. Applied to the skin, it causes a chemical reaction with the amino acids located in the surface cells of the skin and produces a darkening effect.
- DHA Tanning Solution tans only the uppermost layer of the epidermis, the stratum corneum layer. This layer is constantly being sloughed-off by the body. In fact, every 35 to 45 days, you have an entirely new epidermis.
- Of note: DHA is the only active sunless tanning ingredient that is FDA approved. DHA-based sunless tanning has been recommended by The Skin Cancer Foundation, American Academy of Dermatology Association, Canadian Dermatology Association and the American Medical Association. It’s safe and effective.
Quick Start Instructions
System Set up
- Connect the white hose to the airbrush (a) and the compressor (b).
- Connect one of the gravity feed plastic cups (f) to the airbrush.
- Connect the AC adapter (c) to the compressor (d) and plug the adapter into an electrical outlet.
- The on/off/mode switch will light up indicating the compressor is ready to go.
- Locate the oval button (e). The left side of the button is the on/off switch.
- The right side controls the mode or air flow - light, medium, or high.
- The makeup goes into the gravity feed plastic fluid cup (there are two sizes: 3/4 & 1.5 fluid oz.), the trigger controls the flow of air and tanning lotion.
Practice Guide
- Turn on the airbrush and choose the high mode. Air will flow from the airbrush even without the trigger being utilized. Try the airbrush on your skin so you understand the feeling of air only.
Tip(s): Hold the airbrush like a pen, using your index finger to pull the trigger; the airbrush should be 6-8 inches away from the surface of your skin. - Add water to the airbrush cup. Pull back the trigger behind the cup and begin the flow of water. Now, spray the water on your skin to experience how the tanning solution will feel.
- Practice moving the airbrush in an overlapping circular motion. The further back the trigger is pulled, the more tanning solution comes out.
- Choose the color you need: The Belloccio Sunless Tan Airbrush Tanning System is designed to work best with our Simple Tan & Opulence Professional Salon "DHA" Sunless Tanning Solutions. Alternative solutions may prove to be too thick or thin for optimal spray performance. Drugstore DHA products generally contain 3-5% amounts of DHA – professional compositions contain 5%-15%.
- Simple Tan Professional Salon "DHA" Sunless Tanning Solutions are as listed below:
- 8.5%, medium and dark (works best for fair skinned individuals)
- 12.5%, medium and dark (works best for darker skinned individuals)
- reapply the sunless - or self-tanner about every three days to maintain your "tan," or
- extend your usage to every one or two weeks using a "tan-extender lotion" between sprays to keep your tan looking dark and rich.
Prepare your skin
- Shower and exfoliate to eliminate the surface skin that is ready to slough off. If possible, apply nail polish or a clear polish to your nails to prevent the possibility of discoloration.
- Apply no lotions, creams, makeup or other products to the skin, and do not wear jewelry that could block the tanning solution from penetrating or cause an uneven application or streaking. Wear an older, dark colored bathing suit or undergarments - planning ahead as to where you want to create your tan lines - if any. It’s generally best for long hair to be tucked into a hairnet or to be tied up away from the face and neck.
- Wear loose fitting clothes after you apply the tanning solution. It is less likely to wear off the tanning product and temporary bronzing guide colors. It is slightly possible that the garments you wear could become stained by the tanning solution depending on the type of fabric - especially if made of white or light colored natural fibers. Avoid sitting on light colored or leather furniture for several hours especially if perspiring or in humid climates, as this could transfer the still-active solution to materials and discolor them. Wash all garments after the tanning time is complete.
Follow these precautions
- Avoid allowing the mist into YOUR eyes, nose or mouth
- Avoid other sensitive tissues as some people may have a sensitivity to one or more of the ingredients listed on the product label (rarely)
- Avoid inhaling the spray mist
- If there is a reaction, irritation or other apparent effects are observed, discontinue exposure and consult your physician
Apply your Tan
- Fill the fluid cup with the Tanning Solution you have selected..
- Turn on the airbrush and choose the medium/high mode. Air will flow from the airbrush even without the trigger being utilized.
- Test the gun by spraying a small quantity into a waste basket or sink to make certain that the solution is flowing properly.
- Apply it on your skin in overlapping circular motions. Start with your arms or legs.
- Color the tops of your feet and hands for a natural look
- When you do your face, cover your hair (a towel will work), fold your lips in and close your eyes. Remember: hold the airbrush like a pen, using your index finger to pull the trigger, the airbrush should be 6-8 inches away from the surface of your skin.
Apply the Tan to a Client
Begin spraying the face with a light coat moving down the neck to the chest. If starting with the face makes you or the client uncomfortable, reverse this first step - chest, neck - then face.
- Once this area is complete, spray the tummy. At this point, you can either continue down the front of the legs to the feet, or turn the client and finish the back to complete the upper body. When spraying the front of the legs, have the client place one foot out to allow you to spray the inside of the leg.
Alternate the outstretched foot to allow application to all areas of the legs. - Have the client turn for access to the side, outside and inside of arm and side of the neck. Have the client continue to turn in the same direction to do their back. Continue on down the back of the legs. Where necessary, have the client bend or stretch to eliminate folds or creases under buns, breasts or other areas to allow an even application.
- Once you are confident that you have covered all areas of the client; face, chest, tummy, back, arms, and legs, it’s generally a good idea to apply an additional spray to the face, and have the client turn so you can examine all areas for sparse or excess coverage.
- If the solution is running, you should blot it with a towel and spray a small amount to even out the application. Once you have an even application, you can go over the client again without triggering the gun - the dry air from the gun will accelerate the drying process. They should avoid lowering their arms against their sides or pressing their thighs together until thoroughly dry.
Apply Your Spray
- Plan ahead to not bathe, swim or otherwise get wet for 12 hours after the application.
- After the 12 hours, when you bathe or shower, some color may wash off - this is merely the excess product. It’s normal, and will still leave you with a deep tan. Your new tan will begin to fade over the next few days. To achieve the darkest, longest-lasting tan, you should "tan" again within 2 or 3 days of the first application, and every week or two thereafter. Fading can be slowed if you moisturize regularly. Because the tan is only on the uppermost dead skin layer, which is perpetually being sloughed off, keeping the skin moisturized and not exfoliating will slow this process, and could extend your tan to perhaps 10 or more days. Also, using Belloccio TAN EXTENDER between applications will give the tanned skin a darker and more even appearance.
How to Maintain your Tanning Equipment
After you complete your tan, rinse and clean the fluid cup with clean water. Add several drops of a mild liquid cleaner and spray the cleaning solution through the brush into the sink or onto a paper towel or tissue until you are confident that all of the tanning solution has been washed from the airbrush. Unscrew the fluid cup and dry it. Spray the airbrush until only dry air comes through. Do not leave tanning solution in the fluid cup/airbrush overnight.
To clean the Airbrush System:
- Twist off the back end or "handle" of the brush.
- Unscrew, but do not remove, the "needle chucking nut"
(this is what holds the needle in place) - Gently remove the needle.
- Clean it by pulling the needle over a paper towel or tissue that you have added a few drops of cleaning solution or water to.
- While the needle is separate from the airbrush, remove the needle cap and use a cotton swab (add 2 drops of water to the swab) to clean any tanning residue on the edges of the cap. Buildup of product could obstruct or diminish the fine atomization of the tanning solution on the next use.
- Gently replace the needle (1), tapping the end to make certain it is properly inserted. Tighten the needle chucking nut (2).
- Replace the handle, your airbrush is clean.
Special Tips:
- Sputtering - If you have cleaned your airbrush and sputtering still occurs, it may be caused by airbrush parts not being properly tightened. The following components should be checked: the needle cap (1), the nozzle cap, (2) the nozzle (3), and the needle chucking nut (4).
- Automatic Spraying - If the tanning solution sprays without the trigger being pulled, it most likely is caused by the needle not being inserted properly into the airbrush.
- To throughly clean the fluid passage, occassionally you will need to remove the nozzle (#3) with the Spanner Wrench that is included with the airbrush, and carefully clean any product residue on the nozzle and in the needle space.
How to Fold the Tanning Tent
- Method 1: Standard Technique (Shown in the picture below and the video above)
- Method 2: Alternate Technique
- First collapse the tent to form a single flat panel by bringing one the front corners into the opposite back corner of the tent together. Fold the two panels together to form a single flat panel.
- Put the top of the tent on the floor and hold the tents bottom up in the air with each hand on the opposite side bands of the tent. Fold bottom of the tent in half to a "U" shape towards the top, then continue bending all the way down so that the tents bottom touches just inside the edge of the tents top.(Note: This process will also work the same if the bottom is on the floor and the top is folded towards the bottom.)
- Now twist and invert the side bands while pushing down towards the floor while also pulling the side bands towards your feet, so that one loop crosses over the other and tent will colapse into 3 circular bands. (Note: Reversing your hand positions on the side bands after the tent is folded in half, makes it easier to twist and invert them). The tent is now ready to store into you carrying bag.
- Method 3: Advanced Technique
Once you have mastered the basic technique of folding the tent, you should be able to move on to the advanced technique of folding the tent. The advanced techniuque allows you the fold the tent in one continuous motion using the same instructional steps in Method 2, but applying them while holding the whole tent in the air with the bottom panel against your chest. The tent is now ready to store into you carrying bag.
